Why go

It's not a church inside a cave. It's the mine that became a cathedral.

Zipaquirá has been taking salt out of the mountain for centuries. Where miners opened galleries, huge voids were left in the rock, and inside them, 180 meters below the surface, an entire cathedral was carved: naves, dome, narthex and the Stations of the Cross, all cut into the salt.

The visit

What you'll see, in the order of the visit

About 2 hours underground, with an audio guide all the way.

  1. Access tunnel into the mine, lit by ceiling lampsWilliam Neuheisel from DC, US · CC BY 2.0

    01

    The descent

You walk in through a tunnel that gets colder and quieter with every step, down to the mine's galleries.

  2. Mine gallery with steps lit in violetWilliam Neuheisel from DC, US · CC BY 2.0

    02

The Stations of the Cross in the rock

The Stations of the Cross are carved into the salt itself. The lighting works the translucent rock: the same wall turns blue, then amber, then violet.

    03

    The naves

Naves, dome and narthex carved into the voids the mine left behind. At the end of the main nave, the great illuminated cross.

    04

    Sculptures in salt

Figures and reliefs carved into the rock line the way, lit like museum pieces.

  5. Water mirror reflecting a wooden walkway in the galleryWilliam Neuheisel from DC, US · CC BY 2.0

    05

    The water mirror

A sheet of still water reflects the lit gallery: the spot where almost every visitor falls silent.

  6. Included in the Basic Passport

The Basic Passport adds the mapping show on the rock, the 3D short film “Nucuma”, the exit train, the “Huellas de Sal” walk and three museums in the complex.

Frequently asked questions

What people usually ask

Is this the official Salt Cathedral website?

No. The Singular Club is an agency: we issue your ticket in your name through the Salt Cathedral's sales system for agencies. The complex's official website is catedraldesal.gov.co.

When and how do I get my ticket?

It isn't instant: once the payment is confirmed, our team issues the ticket in your name and sends it by e-mail within 12 hours. That's why we only sell time slots at least 12 hours in advance. That ticket is what you show at the entrance.

What does the ticket include?

The Basic Passport covers the full cathedral route (naves, narthex, dome and water mirror), audio guide, the mapping show, the 3D short film “Nucuma”, the exit train, the “Huellas de Sal” walk and entry to the Brine Museum, the Archaeological Museum and the Monumental Museum 180. The Ruta del Minero and the climbing wall are sold separately by the complex.

What does a resident need?

The resident fare is only for people who live in Colombia and hold a Colombian cédula. At checkout we ask for the cédula number for each resident ticket, and the document is checked at the entrance. Without a Colombian cédula, the foreign visitor fare applies.

Do children pay?

Children under 4 get in free: just add them to the order. For children aged 4 to 12 we don't have a child fare; message us before buying.

Is there a fare for people aged 60+?

Yes. Foreign visitors aged 60 or older have their own fare (bring photo ID showing your age), and so do residents aged 60+, with the Colombian cédula. The prices are in the tickets section.

Is the Cathedral in Bogotá?

It's in Zipaquirá, about 50 km north of Bogotá: around 1 hour by car from downtown. It's a half-day trip.

Can I see the Salt Cathedral and the Gold Museum on the same day?

You can, but it's tight: the cathedral is a half-day trip outside Bogotá and the museum is in the historic center. Consecutive days work better, and remember the Gold Museum is closed on Mondays.
